Insane Boats

introduction

Based in California, Insane Boats develop and sell performance, competition ready remote controlled boats, specifically hulls and a range of individual hardware pieces. Steve had decided it was time to update to a new platform in order to gain more control of the online shop. His old website was looking pretty outdated and was using a platform that wasn’t very intuitive to use. After discovering my previous work, Steve reached out to me and we discussed how we could create a new website.

Goals

Automate the sales process, i.e. orders, shipping labels, accounting. Create an easier way to add and edit products. Make the website easier to use with a clean navigation and product search. Reinvigorate the aesthetic of the website. What we were really looking to do was basically improve both the back and front end experiences to make it an easier and more enjoyable shopping experience for everyone.

Reinvigorating the aesthetic

There wasn’t any kind of cemented brand identity in place so we could make some tweaks to what he currently had in the form of a slightly tweaked logo and updated colour scheme, which is basically just a bright, unrelenting yellow to coincide with the “Insane” idea, paired with black to contrast it. I wanted to create a sense of kinetic energy with the look of the website, so certain elements are at a diagonal edge or have overlapping elements. Another aspect to the site is the idea of very logical, brutalist instruction manual style typefaces because the build it yourself element to the product, this was to appeal to the kind of people who enjoy RC model boats.

Making the website easier to navigate.

As previously mentioned we used Webflow to build the website and as the e-commerce platform, meaning we had control over almost every aspect of how the site feels and functions. We could introduce elements such as a breadcrumb trail, where users can understand and go back to the pages they had previously been to. As well as product search as a lot of the products in the store are quite specific and there’s a lot of products to get through.
